Great 2nd pic of Ginger B. goin' off! One of my all time fave drummers! I'd have to say I favor the smaller, be-bop kits (Gretsch,Slingerland,Ludwig,etc..)from the 50's & 60's. Vintage kits of that era are through the roof!
I had a Slingerland kit with a small, single bass drum, a mounted tom tom, a floor tom, a chrome Ludwig snare, a Paiste crash cymbal, a Zildjian ride cymbal, and a no name hi-hat. Except for the small bass drum, that was pretty standard for the 60's.
All the heads were muffled with wide strips of muslin, trying to get that Ginger Baker "dead thump" sound. The "glassy" sounding chrome snare kind of contradicted that sound...which in the hands of a drummer with more talent (or any talent!) would have been useful.
I also liked hefty drum sticks with nylon tips. Never got past the military left hand grip, either. Both were habits left over from my days in the band at school.
This is another version of Toad, from 1967...not the version on Wheels Of Fire. Essentially the same drum solo as the famous version on the album, but different enough to be worth listening to if you're into GB.

Yup, I agree with everything you said.
Terry Bozzio, bottom shot, is incredible as well. I just think his kit is WAYYYY over the top!
