What's the community concensus regarding documenting the riding of high performance surfmats? Please elaborate in the comments section...

that movie sounds awsome!!

.i think we need to get about 6 matters to ride the same DOH rincon or c st wave!

would a helmet cam show speed blurs? is there a camera with perifiel vision?

Today a bodyboarder friend of mine took off on a 4' wave....

.i said nothing and took off behind him in the mush,,,

i silently rode behind him for 4 or 5 seconds the whole time squeezing my mats rail to slow down ...

he cuts back and is suprised to see me chillen in the pocket, i let go of my rail, put my arms behind my back and flew past him in a second...

he bogs and i ride the wave to the beach!

when i see him back at the linup we laugh and trade vehicles...

we both take off on the same wave with me riding behind him on the boogie....

if i had a helmet cam for this it wouldve been a true testament to high performance mats...

i watched him let go of the rails and hit those high gears for the first time....and the jazzed expression on his face as he paddled back out...

end scene..... : )

Yes, by all means popularize mat riding with documentation so that the mat makers can earn a living with their hard-won skills!

Consider... all of the most experienced mat surfers in the world are alive and active.

I would love to see more mat action on film. (I have almost worn out the special features part of State of S!)

Dale, You've made my point exactly.
Eventually, hopefully later than sooner, the most skilled and experienced mat riders won't be so active, and unless the artform is documented, it stands a chance of disappearing. Same goes with the art of matmaking, hopefully the luxury of being able to order up a mat from two genius craftsmen will continue for a long time, but we can't predict the future. It would be very disappointing if either art form disappears prematurely.

Jamie,

You're absolutely correct!

I've worked with and built custom mats for all of them. And they're more stoked than children! But time is short. All we have is today...
