RIP Sheriff John...

1919-2012

So Cal boomers will vividly remember The Sheriff John Lunch Brigade, which aired on KTTV from 1952 through 1970. A decidedly sane children's show host (when compared to the likes of Soupy Sales!) Sheriff John offered up a friendly face in the form of a supportive authority figure.

Details of his life and TV work can be found here...

We didn't have TV when I grew up, but I got to watch all I wanted when I went to my grandma's house. I was usually alone, maybe sometimes with my sister, so I came away with the feeling that Sheriff John and Captain Kangaroo et al were talking directly to me. A couple of years ago I crossed paths with "Sailor Tom" Hatten at an event in LA; he presented Popeye cartoons for many years. I told him about that, how I felt like he already knew me, and he laughed--he says he gets that all the time. Anyway, RIP Sheriff John. It was a sweet performance you gave.

Oh I sure do remember him! I have no doubt that"Put Another Candle on My Birthday Cake" and that whirling frosted cake initiated my birthday apoplexy. Left a trail of happy memories, passed away in his sleep at age 92. That's a good way to have done it.

Heck ya! I won two tickets to Knott's Berry Farm in a guess the weight of the donkey contest on his show.
