My experience starting out was that if you can get yourself some smallish, clean, peeling point waves, your skill level will skyrocket very quickly. They give you so much more time to do one thing or another and then feel/see its effects. I got lucky in deep Mexico and felt like I progressed many months in just a couple weeks.
