However, the mat riders showed up in force. (Jonathan, Tremor, Craig and Bruce were in the water when this photo was taken. Valerie was also there. From the left: Chad, Josh, James, Julie, Matt, Graham, Dave and Surfsis.)

Contrary to popular belief, conditions were not quite as good as they were last year. The waves were just as big, true, but the shape was much better at last year's meet at Cottons. With that said, there were waves to be had. More importantly, mat riders got a chance to come together to hang out on the beach or tear it up in the water. The sets prompted a few, including yours truly, to stay on land. Nevertheless, it was still a good day for one and all.
Rumor has it that Matitude will be calling the next mat meet (at a spot that will remain secret). He will let us know when to light up the skies with the mat signal. We will then figure out how to relay the information to everyone else.

that looks great!Proper beachbreak. We're getting your hurricane mess over here...
Oh it was better then that! Tryn to keep cottons secret eh? Dont blame you, thats the perfect mat wave!.... My last ride was soooo epic... RTT double barrel into the rocks ,put nice hole in the back of my wetty too...
It was still pumping and even blowing hard offshore when we left!
No, Cottons is not a secret. Neither is Bolsa. But I think the spot James alluded to should be kept on the down low.
Oh ya, was kidding...the cottons locals were mellow even out at the peak....
im pulling off that wave in the photo.. shared another ride with that guy where he did the same for me....Definetly some malibuish team rides out there though...
Sorry you werent feeling up for it and we didnt really chat... I had to get my fill out there cuz i missed most of this swell....
SS, your expression says it all in that group picture!
Trying to get off the hook for your blatant drop-in eh Matt?
We believe you mate. ;-)

Great photos. Kudos to Ken!
Aww ...called out! You got me G... Burned him good on the drop... Mined his stoke for sure..
tuskedbeast, I realize today that I am just physically spent after three straight weeks of dogsitting (which involved being at my friend's house each day by 6:30 a.m.), surfing, skating, matting and mommying. I had nothing left to give by the time the mat meet rolled around. And the waves weren't tempting enough to make me suck it up! LOL! I will take some time to rest, and work a new job, and get back in the water on Friday.
Looked like it was a lot of fun. Would love to have been there!

heres a taste of the "secret" spot
the thing is there is a much more popular break next door . the surfers would rather ride that spot. this lil left over break is really fun on mats though heres a typical windy afternoon session
the surf got as the morning went on
at cottons as we were leaving at 12:30 the sind snapped side offshore for some epic views as were were walking away mins later it went full raging onshore. the waves were def sectioning less as the tide rose and gathered the swell on the reef better.
I might have to attend one of these, next year maybe?
